As the leaves turn and the crisp autumn air returns to Maine, it’s a season for reflection, community, and engagement – online and in person!
From the recent rollout of Maine’s Online Voter Registration system to new state efforts to address climate resilience after the devastating storms from earlier this year, there is so much to discuss this fall. Our October Lunch & Learn series will dive into these timely issues and more, bringing you insights from youth climate activists, election experts, and leaders in environmental policy. As always, there is no cost to participate in our online Lunch & Learns!
October is also when we hold our annual Evening for the Environment , which brings together community advocates and partners, legislators, business leaders, youth activists, and philanthropists to celebrate the bold work we do together. This year’s event [[link removed]] will feature Wolostoqey visual artist and writer Mikhu Paul performing Msi-te Ktahkomiq Kintaqot, The Whole World Resounds. And, featured speaker Philip Gregory will share the story of Held v. Montana , a landmark victory for climate justice in the first constitutional climate case to go to trial in the United States. Friday, October 11, 12-1 PM: A Youth Voice in Climate Justice: The Held v. Montana Case
In advance of the exciting featured speaker at the Evening for the Environment – Phil Gregory, co-counsel for Our Children’s Trust – youth plaintiff Grace Gibson-Snyder will join us to bring her story to life. In landmark climate cases, youth plaintiffs are taking a stand for climate justice. Grace is one of the young people represented by Our Children’s Trust in the Held v. State of Montana lawsuit. Grace will share her firsthand experience as a plaintiff: agreeing to participate, testifying at trial, and becoming a voice for youth in the climate movement. The Held case challenges state support for fossil fuels and seeks to affirm the young people’s constitutional right to a “clean and healthful” environment. Tune in to hear Grace’s inspiring story of youth activism and the power of young voices in shaping the future.

Friday, October 18, 12-1 PM: Vermont’s Climate Superfund: A New Era of Accountability
Earlier this year, Vermont made history by passing the Climate Superfund Act, marking a new era in holding the world’s largest polluters financially accountable. For the first time, fossil fuel corporations, including Big Oil, will be required to pay for the damage their carbon pollution has inflicted on our climate. The Superfund will assess the cost of climate impacts on Vermont and issue recovery demands proportional to each corporation's contribution to the crisis.
Join Johanna Miller, Energy, Climate Program Director for the Vermont Natural Resources Council, and Ben Edgerly Walsh of the Vermont Public Interest Research Group, as they explain how this groundbreaking law works and the tangible benefits it will bring to Vermont as the state adapts to more frequent and severe climate impacts like flooding and extreme temperatures. Could this legislation serve as a model for the rest of the country?
