Jared Kushner is spearheading a Trump administration program to collect and share Americans' private health information during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are doing this without the consent of patients or doctors and are refusing to share even basic information about the program with the public. Simply put, without more information, this looks like a clear violation of our privacy.

Mark and two of his Democratic colleagues in Congress recently sent a letter to the president's son-in-law to express deep concern about the potential privacy challenges this program could pose. They asked for answers to critically important questions about how data will be collected and used, including:

What does this program aim to accomplish?
When will the federal government stop collecting and sharing health data with the private sector for the public health surveillance initiative?
What steps has the Administration taken to adhere to the Privacy Act, which limits the federal government's authority to collect personal data from third parties and imposes numerous other privacy safeguards?

So far, neither Mr. Kushner nor anyone in the Trump administration has responded, leaving us in the dark about critical details of the program.

Mark is a longtime advocate for patient privacy and has insisted that existing privacy laws be updated to keep up with advances in technology. He will continue to work hard to ensure that our rights are protected and to demand transparency from this administration.
