President Trump signed my bipartisan, bicameral bill, the Taxpayer First Act into law. It represents years of hard work and consensus building. Among other things, this bill requires the IRS to submit to Congress plans to redesign the structure of the agency to improve efficiency, modernize technology systems, enhance cyber security and better meet taxpayer needs. It’s a big first step toward strengthening taxpayer protections and turning the IRS into the customer service organization it ought to be. This new law is a victory for taxpayers, and its critical reforms are long overdue.
For years, Big Oil and its advocates on and off Capitol Hill have worked hard to undermine the RFS and dole out ‘hardship’ waivers to oil companies without regard to actual need. Hardship waivers should be the exception, not the rule, and they have been abused for far too long. President Trump has promised time and again to farmers and agribusinesses in Iowa and throughout Rural America to uphold the integrity of the RFS and follow the law as it’s written. I would expect the EPA, with input from USDA, will honor President Trump’s commitment to follow the law.
As leaders of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Wyden and I sent letters to 10 tax-exempt organizations requesting information about their financial relationship with opioid manufacturers and other medical entities. Congress has a responsibility to ensure transparency and accountability in matters that directly affect federal health care programs and tax-exempt organizations. That includes examining the extent to which pharmaceutical manufacturers fund tax-exempt organizations and how these payments may influence pain treatment practices and policy. It's important to shed light on these financial relationships to ensure transparency and accountability in matters that affect federal health care programs and the patients who participate in them.
