Today is a difficult day. On the last Sunday in September, we come together to recognize Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day — a day to honor the families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Since World War I, military families flew flags displaying a blue star for every family member in active service and a gold star for those who died in the line of duty. The gold star has since become a symbol of both profound loss and immense pride, representing the sacrifice, grief and ongoing healing of families of the fallen.

Today we're asking all our supporters to show their compassion and care for the tens of thousands of Gold Star Families across the country right now. Will you sign the USO's card to honor our fallen heroes, Gold Star Families and all who serve?

We know we can never replace your loved ones who gave their lives in service of our country. We honor them, and you, for their ultimate sacrifice. With gratitude, [your name]

PLEASE SIGN THE CARD

Nothing ever truly prepares you for the loss of a loved one. But with the help of caring friends like you, the USO provides Gold Star Families with strength and support during the most heartbreaking moments of their lives.

When families receive that dreaded call, their lives are forever changed. Through your compassion and generosity, the USO can continue the Families of the Fallen program, which has supported every dignified transfer of lives lost at Dover Air Force Base for the past 33 years. We help arrange travel and lodging for families to stay at Dover and witness the return of their loved one, providing around-the-clock support every step of the way.

But healing takes time. It's a lifelong journey, and that's why days like today are so important. We have set a goal to fill this card with 25,000 signatures via email and text message from caring friends, and we need your help to let all Gold Star Families know they're forever in our hearts. Will you please add your name now to show them they are not alone?

Thank you,

—The USO
