As we begin our seventh week of the UK lockdown, it’s safe to say that these last two months have been far from easy.
Over the last few weeks we, like everyone else, have had to adapt to these unprecedented world-wide changes. We’ve responded by stepping up our existing campaign on making medicines and treatments accessible for all, and we’ve launched a new campaign calling for the cancellation of debt from lower-income countries. And much more.
We are only able to do this because of people like you.
To show our appreciation, we have compiled a brief summary specifically about what you have helped us do in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
** New online campaign actions

to build wide support for our campaign and demand politicians take action
As part of our long-standing pharmaceuticals campaign to ensure medicines and treatments are available to everyone everywhere, we launched a new online action calling on the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and Secretary of State for International Development to attach conditions on all UK funding for a Covid-19 vaccine so that it is affordable in all countries ([link removed]) and free to the public and to globally co-ordinate to ensure that any vaccine reaches those most at risk everywhere.

We also asked our supporters to email Matt Hancock’s office asking him to publicly welcome and commit to supporting Costa Rica’s proposal ([link removed]) for a Covid-19 global mechanism for all countries to get access to affordable testing, treatment and vaccines.

And alongside our work on economic justicewe launched a new campaign ([link removed]) calling on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to push the IMF and others to cancel debt payments for countries suffering from the economic impacts of coronavirus. Help countries in trouble to restructure their debt rather than bailing out lenders.

Webinar and interview series

to spread the message about our campaign issues and learn from campaigners and activists around the globe.
We’ve created an ongoing series of webinars exploring the changes we need to bring about to make sure that the management of this global crisis and its aftermath won't just take us back to the status quo, but to a more equal society. The webinars take place every fortnight via Zoom and you can register to attend on our website. We also record them so that you can watch or listen to them in your own time.

Your support has also enabled us to be active in the media in response to the crisis. Highlights include being interviewed on BBC World News ([link removed]) on the pharmaceutical industry, being interviewed on Sky News ([link removed]) about the impact of coronavirus on the global south, and coverage in Huffington Post ([link removed]) on our vaccine open letter. We’ve also written comment pieces including on Big Pharma ([link removed]) , financial reform ([link removed]) , global debt

** New informative policy briefings

to help us to keep lobbying MPs persuading them to support our campaign in parliament
Your support has helped us put together a briefing outlining what needs to happen to make any Covid-19 vaccine available and affordable to everyone, everywhere ([link removed]) , including public interest conditions on research and development of vaccines and treatments, and the use of Crown Use licenses for any patented technologies.
In another new briefing we explore how many countries in the global south have been left unable to protect their people and economies during the pandemic ([link removed]) because of ‘structural adjustment’ policies imposed by rich countries and international institutions like the IMF. And how we can right these wrongs by demanding Immediate, unconditional debt cancellation, a package of support to build up public healthcare services, a wealth tax and fundamental reform to the global economy.
** International solidarity actions

to link up with other social justice movements across the world and build an international solidarity network
We co-organised and signed an open letter ([link removed]) together with more than 20 organisations including Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Access Campaign, MSF UK and Oxfam GB, calling on the UK government to guarantee equitable access to any new drug by imposing strict public interest conditions on all UK funding, as well as supporting the proposal from the president of Costa Rica for a ‘global patent pool’.
