Dear Reader,
Days before shelter-in-place orders changed all of our lives, The Hechinger Report recognized that education as we once knew it would never be the same. As some of our staff fought the virus, homeschooled our own children or took care of sick loved ones, we also began producing story after story on the impact coronavirus is having on school inequality.
By the end of April, we had more than doubled our usual output, producing close to 50 stories that describe how shuttered campuses and classrooms throughout the U.S. are coping. We also quickly realized that, with the economy in shambles and unemployment rates soaring, news outlets like ours would soon suffer.
Since we launched 10 years ago this week, The Hechinger Report has relied on philanthropic support, along with generous donations from readers.
