Dear John, We have learned so much during this coronavirus crisis. About the bravery and commitment of NHS and care staff. About who really makes a difference in our society. About what community means. About both our own fragility and our remarkable resilience. We’ve also been reminded about how precarious life is for so many, including those on whom we depend for our survival, from those who we rely on to harvest our food and stack supermarket shelves to those caring for our most vulnerable and those keeping the buses on the road. Most of all, we’ve learned that although we are all weathering the same storm, we are not in the same boat. We don’t want to go back to the way things were before - the inequality and the unfairness. We can’t go back to normal because normal was intolerable for so many. Political failure is at heart a failure of imagination and these past few months have stretched our imaginations like never before. For decades, we’ve been told that we can’t be too ambitious, that some things just aren’t possible. And yet, it turns out, when the will is there what we were told was politically impossible can sometimes become politically inevitable. Over the next few days I am going to be setting out some thoughts on the first steps to something better than before. I hope you’ll walk with me as together we take those first steps on a journey that ends with a fairer, kinder, greener future we are finally daring to imagine. In hope. Caroline Lucas MP PS.
