9 & 10 News: Michigan Voting Rights Act advances out of committee [[link removed]]
John: The Michigan Voting Rights Act is good legislation. This bill:
➜ Guarantees in state law protections previously afforded under the 1965 federal Voting Rights Act.
➜ Establishes a nonpartisan election information database.
➜ Requires some local governments to provide alternate language voting materials.
➜ Allows for curbside voting and other assistive services for disabled voters.
This package of bills will reinforce Michigan’s election system and provide clear pathways for those who feel their voting rights are being infringed to right the wrongs that may have stopped them from voting.
Remember: The recent 8th Federal Circuit Court ruling is one of the most dangerous anti-voter rulings we’ve seen in years . In the eight states impacted by the ruling, voters and voting rights organizations can no longer sue to overturn unjust laws under the Voting Rights Act.
These new laws, if passed in Michigan, would restore those protections and codify them into state law, regardless of how the Supreme Court eventually rules.
John: We need to pass these bills in Michigan and expand this movement to other states around the country. Pitch in $25 or whatever you can today to defend the right to vote and support our work to pass critical pro-voter legislation nationwide >> [[link removed]]

The original Voting Rights Act stands as one of the most important laws ever passed in American history and, even neutered, is still a critical protection against discrimination in our democracy. With certain courts are still trying to dismantle it piece by piece, we need states to act and protect our right to vote.
We're not the only ones who see it this way. “ Passage of a state voting rights act will have an important deterrent effect and enshrine provisions to prevent new violations from occurring in the first instance ,” said Martin Harris of the Legal Defense Fund. “ Enshrining these provisions into law will further strengthen Michigan’s democracy for all voters and ensure that voters of color have robust protections .”
Governors and state legislatures can act to help solve the voting rights crisis . It's up to us to make sure they do their jobs.
John, we need to spread laws like this around the country, from Arizona to Nevada to Georgia. Pitch in $25 or whatever you can today to help expand ballot access and make every vote count nationwide! >> [[link removed]]
