Get the Facts: The Truth Behind January 6
Last week, the House Administration Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight released documents containing transcript excerpts that revealed a lot about what truly happened in the days leading up to and on January 6, 2021. Here’s the truth you may not have heard. Senior Pentagon officials unnecessarily delayed the DC National Guard response to the Capitol on January 6th due to optics concerns.
On January 3rd, President Trump told General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff there would be a large number of protestors on January 6th and to make sure there was sufficient National Guard or soldiers to make sure it was a safe event. President Trump even said, “… I don’t care if you use Guard, or Soldiers, active-duty Soldiers, do whatever you have to do. Just make sure it’s safe.” Despite these explicit instructions to maintain the safety of the event, these orders were disregarded. Acting Secretary of Defense at the time, Christopher Miller, was even quoted as saying, “There was absolutely no way – there is absolutely no way I was putting U.S. military forces at the Capitol, period.”
President Trump was not the only one requesting increased military presence at the Capitol on January 6th. Chief of U.S. Capitol Police at the time, Steven Sund, made an urgent request for the National Guard saying, “… We are being overrun.” Still, after the request was made, General Piatt recommended the Secretary of the Army not support the request. In the hours that followed, many National Guardsmen voiced concerns about their lack of response, confused as to why the optics mean so much when a potentially dangerous event to both life and property was occurring. No matter how vocal their concerns, they were met with pushback.
In the end, we all saw what happened on January 6th, but it’s time the American people heard the full story. For a link to the full timeline of events, including the National Guard response, click here and find transcripts here.
