Dear Friend,
As we approach the end of Banned Books Week, PEN America has spent time mobilizing writers, readers, and activists to defend the freedom to read. With 10,000 books and counting banned in the last school year, censorship is growing. LGBTQ+ youth and students of color are most impacted, finding that the stories that most represent them are becoming more scarce.
But our work is not for naught. Our research, advocacy, and coalition building have had real effect, emboldening students, teachers, librarians and parents to fight back and to use our data to make their cases at their local boards, and even the United States Congress [[link removed]] .
