Dear Friend,
Politics in Canada is often Shakesperean. “Full of sound and fury… signifying nothing.” But for heights of hyperbolic hyper-partisanship, Pierre Poilievre takes the cake. This week he said the Liberal government’s carbon price would cause a “nuclear winter” for the economy.
“There would be mass hunger and malnutrition with a tax this high… Our seniors would have to turn the heat down to 14 or 13 C just to make it through the winter. Inflation would run rampant and people would not be able to leave their homes or drive anywhere.”
Post-pandemic, there are global headwinds for economies around the world. Inflation worsened, not from carbon pricing but from Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and climate events that devastated food-producing regions, not just in Canada, but globally. It is well over a year since inflation rates began coming back down — and the rate is now at the Bank of Canada target of 2%. Hardly a reason for panic in the streets.
As Greens, we address the serious issues in a poly-crisis world. When we rely on the IPCC and science to explain the threat of the galloping climate emergency, we get attacked for being doomsayers. We are the only party consistently addressing real threats to our communities in the climate crisis, as well as the increasing risk of nuclear war — leading to actual nuclear winter. While Poilievre just makes stuff up.
Greens do not trade in fear-mongering and doom. Against all odds, Greens are trying to share a message of positive change. We must face an increasingly unstable world and do so fearlessly. We can offer the solutions that lead us from the abyss — towards a much more secure and healthy future.
But it is hard to be heard above the noise.
More than a century ago, Mark Twain said, “A lie can make its way halfway round the world, while the truth is lacing up its boots.” — And that was before social media!
We need your help to be heard above the noise! We need new laces and new boots before the next election, and for that we need your increased financial support.
DONATE
Soon the media will be reporting on all the parties and our fundraising success at the end of this third quarter of 2024. As Poilievre is up to his neck in cash, donated by those who rise to the click bait of “nuclear winter”, please help us get out a sensible and sane message of shared care and compassion.
Please let us be the antidote to Poilievre’s poison.
Many thanks,
Elizabeth May
