Today, on International Safe Abortion Day, I want to talk about a crucial issue that affects all of us — our freedom to make decisions about our bodies, our healthcare, and our futures.

This November, New Yorkers will have the chance to vote for Proposal 1 — a constitutional amendment that puts power where it belongs: in our hands, not politicians’.

I am thrilled to support Prop 1, and I hope you’ll join me in making sure it passes.

For too long, we assumed our reproductive rights were safe. But when Roe v. Wade fell, we saw just how fragile our freedoms truly are. Here in New York, we’ve faced our own challenges: a staunchly anti-abortion candidate came within five points of winning the Governor’s Mansion in 2022, and dozens of anti-abortion bills have been introduced in our state legislature over the last decade.

Throughout my time in the Senate, I have made reproductive rights a priority. When I first took office in 2019, the first bill I co-sponsored was the Reproductive Health Act, which codified the protections of Roe v. Wade into state law, ensuring safe and legal access to abortion. I also backed the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act to make contraceptives accessible without cost-sharing. From expanding paid family leave to securing child care access for working families, I’ve fought for a New York where every person can make their own reproductive choices without fear of discrimination or economic hardship.

No politician, no matter how out of touch, can take these rights away once they’re enshrined in our state constitution.

This is why Prop 1 is so vital. By voting YES on Prop 1, we’re ensuring that the right to abortion, and all reproductive rights, are permanently protected in New York. It closes gaps in the constitution to prevent discrimination based on gender, age, ethnicity, pregnancy status, disability, or LGBT identity.
