Friend,
With deep reverence, reflection, and gratitude, and one year since his passing, I write to honor Linton Joaquin, a founder and leader of the National Immigration Law Center.
Linton was a trailblazer in the immigrants’ rights movement, described by colleagues as a ‘quiet warrior’ who dedicated his life to advocating for others.
With over thirty years of legal practice, Linton gained national recognition as one of the premier immigrants’ rights litigators in the country. His impact also inspired multiple generations, and he served as a mentor to many. For us, his leadership at NILC remains a guiding model for the work we continue today.
NILC was the culmination of Linton’s life’s work. He served as a staff attorney, director of litigation, general counsel, and executive director, shaping NILC into the organization it is today. His dedication, wisdom, knowledge, and mentorship had a profound impact, while his creative approaches to litigation and advocacy delivered remarkable results for immigrant communities.
While Linton was known for his deep humility, his numerous achievements over his long and distinguished career have left an indelible mark on the people who worked with him, our client communities, and our movement. His legacy is transformative, and forever a part of our shared history.
I hope you’ll take a moment today to acknowledge and be inspired by the memory of Linton Joaquin and his legacy of fighting for equity and justice. We continue our work in his memory and carry his passion and teachings with us each and every day.
In memory and in power,
Kica Matos
President
National Immigration Law Center
