Hi John,
In honor of National Son’s Day, we’re highlighting Amanda Hollowell, When We All Vote’s Managing Director of National Organizing, and her son, Joah. Together, they share why voting is important to them and how they’re passing that legacy of civic engagement on to the next generation.
Joah: If anything, my mom has taught me to be a better person who is kind and helpful to others. That might mean voting and contributing to our democracy by doing all I can to serve others through my vote and doing everything I can to make a difference.
Why was it important to you to teach Joah about voting?
Amanda: Voting is the first step to fully participating in democracy. I’m honest with him that while voting alone won’t solve all our issues, it is an essential part of a bigger effort to advocate for change and hold elected officials accountable. I love watching the moment when the light bulb goes on for him — when he connects the dots, realizes how everything is interconnected, and understands that he can make a real impact.
What issues do you care about most in this year's election?
Joah: I am blessed to be a scholarship athlete, but I worry for my friends and others who can’t afford college or are looking for different career options. My question is, what can be done to help them plan for their future? That’s what I care about.
When you imagine the future of our country, what changes do you wish to see that would impact your son’s life?
Amanda: The change I am so passionate about fighting for will not happen in my lifetime. It might happen during Joah's, but I truly hope it will be realized in the lives of his children. I envision a country that can embrace many perspectives while still valuing the humanity in all of us, a country that sees the fight for equality and equity as not a fight but a foundation. A country where everyone is seen, heard, and represented.
Let’s lead by example, just like Amanda and Joah, and pass down the power of voting. Take the first step today and ensure you’re registered to vote, and make sure all the sons in your life are too, at weall.vote/register. >>> [[link removed]]
