Friend,
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staff around the world have long understood that safe abortion care is a critical part of sexual and reproductive health care. In 2004, this became an integral part of MSF’s policy in order to reduce maternal death and suffering. Today, our staff around the world offer family planning, safe abortion care, and counseling to people to answer any of their questions or concerns.
“I feel good [about providing this care],” said Isaura, a nurse in Beira, Mozambique, who was trained by MSF and has been providing safe abortion care to those in need. “We used to get a lot of incomplete abortions, a lot of unsafe abortions—they used to take [unsafe] pills, they used to insert sticks. Since we started doing safe abortion, we don't have many problems with unsafe abortions in the community anymore. We have prevented deaths.”
As we mark International Safe Abortion Day today, watch this update on our work providing abortion care where it’s needed.
