Dear John

My name’s Katie and I’m a lawyer at Friends of the Earth. I’ve been part of the legal team here for two years now, and I love knowing that our work protects people and planet.

We use the law to hold the government and big businesses to account over their contribution to the climate and nature emergencies.

And right now we’re at a crucial point in the fight against environmental breakdown. We must ensure that the government doesn’t use the pandemic as an excuse to delay climate action. What we do in the next few years – including during this pandemic – will have a real impact on generations to come.

By donating today you could help us take on cases that defend the planet against catastrophic damage – like our recent historic win against the third runway at Heathrow. But fighting in court costs time and money.

This crisis has hit us all in different ways, so we understand if your financial situation’s changed. But if you are able to give at this difficult time – on behalf of those who can’t – it would make all the difference.
YES, I’LL DONATE TO HELP
The road ahead isn’t easy, but with your help I know we’ll be able to face the hurdles we’ve got coming up.

I want to stand up for those who can’t fight their own legal battles. And for those who’ve done the least to cause climate breakdown yet are bearing the brunt of it.

Friends of the Earth's priorities this year include:
  • Investigating the use of UK taxpayers’ money to fund fossil fuel projects abroad.
  • Protecting activists’ freedom to campaign.
  • Defending our historic victory against a proposed third runway at Heathrow, if it’s challenged in the Supreme Court.
The legal team here might be small, but we’re effective.

With your support, we've stood up to the fossil fuel giants by championing the rights of activists to say no to their projects. We’ve even gone to the United Nations to push the UK for improved access to environmental justice for all.
YES, I’LL DONATE TO HELP
When I made the move from private practice to Friends of the Earth, I knew that I would be doing work that made me proud.

But what I didn’t realise was just how much pride it would give me to be part of a bigger movement. We all have our parts to play and it’s supporters like you that make us who we are.

Thank you for everything you do.

PS. As well as winning cases, your donation could help us do vital behind-the-scenes legal work and research needed to tackle climate breakdown.
Being a grassroots network, people and communities are at the heart of all we do.

So while we’ll continue to campaign to stop climate and nature breakdown, during these difficult times our top priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of you, our supporters, and the wider community.

We’ll be doing all we can over the coming weeks to make sure we can support you in any way possible, from showing how you can connect and work with your community online, to sharing stories to help lift your spirits.

Look after yourself, look after each other, look after the planet.
