VICTORY! Trafficking Survivors Relief Act Forwarded to House of Representatives

Your voice has been heard!

In a major victory, the House Judiciary Committee approved the Trafficking Survivors Relief (TSRA) Act and forwarded it to full House for consideration.

This is one of six priority bills that many of you joined us in calling for when we took to Capitol Hill at the 2024 CESE Summit. The TSRA is a federal vacatur bill that allows survivors of sex trafficking to clear criminal records that they unjustly carry for acts committed under coercion. This is crucial for giving survivors a fair chance at a fresh start, free from the stigmas of their past.

A few months ago, nobody thought this bill was going anywhere … but YOU changed this! Never doubt that your voice has power!

We also express our immense gratitude to Rights4Girls, Shared Hope International, World Without Exploitation, Ascend Consulting, and other key allies whose tireless work made this incredible victory possible.

FREE RESOURCE: Image-Based Sexual Abuse Classifications and Definitions

"Students suspended for generating deepfake nudes of peers"

"Woman sues ex-boyfriend for revenge pornography"

"Teens tricked by sextortion scams on social media platforms"

These headlines are all instances of image-based sexual abuse (IBSA).

IBSA is a rampant form of sexual violence ... Yet it is still a little-known term and a poorly understood problem.

The widespread prevalence of IBSA, as well as the diverse means of perpetrating it, compel us to refine the terminology we use to describe it. Using proper language to describe IBSA is essential to enhance public understanding of the problem, rather than to using euphemisms to diminish the serious harms they inflict.

NCOSE has created a FREE resource on IBSA classifications and definitions, to assist in understanding and combatting this form of violence.

By downloading this resource and employing the terminology into your own language, you can help lead the fight against IBSA!

Newsweek: Republicans and Democrats Just Came Together to Protect America's Kids | Opinion

Something extraordinary happened this summer. During one of the most divisive periods in modern U.S. history, Senate Republicans and Democrats came together almost unanimously to advance legislation that protects America's children. This bill, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), requires internet companies to keep children's safety in mind when designing the online platforms they use—something required of every other industry.

This new bill focuses specifically on the platforms' design—not their content. Since senators likely do not agree about what content should be online, the bill instead provides a much-needed, common-sense response to new evidence that social media companies knowingly designed their products with features that exploit the still-developing brains of children and cause them harm.

Now, Big Tech is doing everything it can to kill the bill in the House of Representatives. Why? Money. The six most popular social media platforms earned roughly $11 billion in just one year from advertising that targets children, according to a recent study from Harvard University and Boston Children's Hospital authors.
