John: This election is close and will likely come down to a small number of votes in a handful of states.

You know that. Everyone knows that.

So when we ask you to donate in this situation, what does that mean? Why will it make a difference? Let us explain before we ask you to give for the first time.

First, we have to match Trump's campaign when it comes to ads. If we fall behind further than we already have in some battleground states, that is bad news for us.

In a race this competitive, every vote in every part of a state -- especially in far-flung places -- matters.

When supporters like you chip in, it means that we can turn out the registered Democrats who are infrequent voters or haven't voted in a few elections.

It means we can reach the voters who have switched party registrations several times and convince them to vote for Democrats in November.

This is a large and national election, but in a race this close, it becomes very small and targeted.

In many ways, it would be a lot easier and less expensive to just run some ads and win. The highly focused work we are doing is even more expensive because it's so targeted and geographically distributed.
