Dear Friends,

Recently, I received a video from an incarcerated person in Ohio desperately trapped in a prison cell with two other people who had not only tested positive for COVID-19, but lacked the masks we have all become comfortable with wearing. He only has one year left until his release and yet he used a smuggled cellphone and risked his release date by making the video because he “might not make it home to hug [his] family.” A sentiment we can all identify with during these times.

Today NRCAT is honoring #GivingTuesdayNow, joining people around the world who are promoting grassroots generosity.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, I have shared my insights and lessons learned from the field on virtual town halls, podcasts and interfaith webinars to lift up the deadly danger and fear being experienced by those who are trapped inside prisons and jails.

While correctional responses to the virus have too often been punitive and have dramatically increased separation inside prisons, NRCAT continues to advocate with prison and government officials on the difference between medical separation and the torture of isolation. This includes urging correctional departments to not use solitary confinement as a containment strategy for COVID-19.

Your financial contribution to NRCAT today helps us join our voices with those who have been largely forgotten in this public health crisis. And as for the gentleman incarcerated in Ohio? He is still incarcerated and sadly, has contracted the virus. I wish I could say he will make it home safe, but I know all too well, that nothing is guaranteed in prison, even a release date.

Thank you for your commitment to a torture free world.
