Fighting for small businesses...   Washington, D.C. - With a national debt of more than $35 trillion that continues to grow by the day, I remain committed to reforming federal spending so it is reduced, not increased. As you may know, the Republican-led House has passed five of the 12 regular appropriations bills, all of which make responsible cuts to spending, but the Senate has failed to pass a single appropriations bill. As a result, we were presented with a “clean” continuing resolution this week, H.R. 9747, which I voted against because it did nothing to cut our bloated levels of spending. On Monday, I was honored to be named a Guardian of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business for my work to cut red tape and rein in federal overreach. I also led an effort to deter Mexico from continuing to use its military to illegally occupy the property of an American company, Vulcan Materials. This facility and port are critical to our trade and security strategy, which is why I’m determined to stop the Mexican government from fully seizing it. Click here to learn more. Later that night, I supported the Emerging Innovative Border Technologies Act, IMPACTT Human Trafficking Act, and Seniors Access to Critical Medications Act. These bills will enhance CBP's technological resources to secure our border, support those helping victims of human trafficking, and ensure seniors have access to the critical medications they need. Tuesday morning, I joined the Texas State Society for a panel discussion with my colleague, Congressman Veasey, and Sean Donahue, CEO of DFW Airport, about economic development in our region. I headed to speak with hoteliers from across the country, including in Texas-24, about my work to protect the franchise model, cut regulatory red tape, and create a tax code that allows our hospitality industry to flourish. After, I went to our Ways and Means Committee hearing focused on how state-level misuse of welfare funds is leaving poor families behind while wasting tax dollars. We're working to identify reforms that will empower our working families. I also met with the Texas Farm Bureau to discuss the farm bill, disaster assistance for Texas farmers, as well as tax policy and labor issues affecting the agriculture industry in the Lone Star State. I was honored to receive the 2024 Champion of Small Business Investing Award from the Small Business Investor Alliance for my work to grow small businesses, empower our job creators, and promote access to capital. After, I spoke at the National Federation of Independent Business' Small Business Deduction Summit about my work on the Ways and Means and Small Business Committees to prevent a massive tax hike on our job creators. With more than 100 million acres of overgrown forests in our country, I voted for the Fix Our Forests Act to ensure the health and resiliency of our forests. Wednesday morning, I spoke on the House floor to share the story of Dalton Debrick, an 18-year-old from Irving who tragically was killed during a hazing incident in 2014. I appreciate my colleagues standing with me in supporting the Stop Campus Hazing Act to ensure no parent has to lose their child in the same way. Click here or on the photo below to learn more. I voted for the Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act and the STOP CCP Act. These bills will protect Americans by stopping radical bail reform policies and improve our national security by forcing sanctions on Chinese Communist Party leaders. I also supported a resolution to ensure accountability for key officials in the Biden-Harris administration responsible for the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and loss of American troops. Thursday morning, I spoke with leaders in the hospice industry about my bipartisan work on the Ways and Means Committee to restore hospice program integrity, crack down on bad actors, and support caregivers. After, I met with the Texas Business Leadership Council to discuss our recent North Texas Job Fair, identify challenges affecting our local workforce, and collaborate on solutions. I also met with Heimdal to discuss Texas’ energy industry, innovations in direct air capture technologies, and bureaucratic red tape making it difficult to obtain EPA permits. Later, I met with a North Texas gastrologist and patient to discuss my work to improve access to safer and more transparent treatments. Texas-24 Work of the Week This week, with my strong support, the House passed the Stop Campus Hazing Act. This bipartisan bill will help improve campus safety my combatting hazing and improving transparency of hazing incidents. Texas-24 Hometown Hero This week’s Texas-24 Hometown Hero is 21-year-old sprinter and Southlake native, Korban Best. Korban set a personal best time of 10.75 seconds in the Paris Paralympics, earning him a silver medal in the men’s 100-meter T47 event - America's first medal in the event.
