Friend,
Today is #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity and giving in response to the unprecedented need created by the coronavirus pandemic. AU has led the effort to defend religious freedom during this crisis, and your support has made that possible.
Today is also the eve of the U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments in Trump v. Pennsylvania, a landmark case that could impact the religious freedom of millions of people seeking access to affordable reproductive health care. At the center of this case are the Trump administration’s unlawful rules that would allow employers and universities to invoke religious or moral beliefs to deny birth control coverage guaranteed by the Affordable Care Act to employees and students.
Please consider making a special #GivingTuesdayNow gift to help AU’s legal team fight back whenever religious beliefs are invoked to discriminate or cause harm, especially during this public health crisis: [link removed]
On behalf of Notre Dame students, Americans United has been fighting these very same rules in a related case filed with the National Women’s Law Center and the Center for Reproductive Rights. Tomorrow, these rules will be debated before the highest court in the land – at a time when the Supreme Court is more hostile to religious freedom than it has been in a generation.
The fact is, particularly in the midst of a pandemic, our government should be protecting America’s workers and students, not putting their health care at risk and calling it “religious freedom.”
Should the Supreme Court justices allow these Trump administration rules to go into effect, they would deny tens of thousands of people coverage for contraceptive care otherwise guaranteed by law.
To try to prevent that from happening, Americans United, joined by 23 religious and civil rights organizations, filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court urging the justices to protect employees’ religious freedom and block these unlawful rules from going into effect.
As the Supreme Court prepares to hear oral arguments tomorrow, will you make a #GivingTuesdayNow gift to support AU’s work to protect religious freedom and public health during this unprecedented crisis? Click here: [link removed]
Thank you for all you do to support our cause. I hope that on this special day of unity and giving, we can all find ways to do our part to stay together and committed to the causes – and people – that are dearest to us.
In solidarity,
Rachel K. Laser
President and CEO
P.S. At 3 p.m. ET today, I will be joining AU’s allies for a virtual rally to urge the court to protect reproductive freedom in this case – click here to RSVP and join us from home: [link removed]
