TODAY: Come Learn How You Can Help Reduce Energy Insecurity in Our Community & Lower Your Own Energy Bill
Do you struggle with your energy bills? Want to be a part of the just transition to renewable energy but feel left out, or simply aren’t sure where to begin? Then join us for Power Uptown: Tackling Energy Insecurity Together on Friday, Sept. 27 at the Forum at Columbia University (601 West 125th Street). Running from 3:30-7:00 PM, this community-focused event will have three parts:
1) an Energy Opportunity Expo (3:30-5:00 PM) with experiential pavilions related to energy insecurity, including practical demonstrations of the day–to-day possibilities of clean cooking and clean energy transition;
2) an Energy Opportunity Teach-in (5:00-6:00 PM) where experts will share practical tips, resources, and success stories, empowering residents to make informed choices about energy consumption and conservation and where to seek help; and
3) an Energy Justice Panel (6:00-7:00 PM) discussion with elected and appointed officials who have been leading various initiatives at the federal, state, and city levels in support of energy justice and opportunity.
One of the many cool things our folks will be talking about is the Manhattan Clean Energy Hub, which can help tenants, nonprofits, small businesses, and affordable housing owners in Manhattan learn about and access low- and no-cost renewable energy upgrades that improve indoor air quality and reduce utility costs. And speaking of indoor air quality, the Association for Energy Affordability will be showcasing induction stoves, along with a tabletop stove giveaway. Also, Con Edison will be talking about programs that could help you lower your energy bill. Plus, we’ll have free NYSERDA Energy Saving kits for your home (designed to help you reduce your energy bills…quantities are limited, so first come, first served). RSVP today!

Building Power: WE ACT Convenes Environmental Justice Leadership Forum
Earlier this month, we gathered members of the Environmental Justice Leadership Forum, a national coalition of more than 50 environmental justice organizations working together to advance environmental and climate justice. This year’s convening, Strengthening Voices: Capacity Building for a Just Tomorrow, was in Memphis, where we were hosted by Sowing Justice. The focus was on empowering frontline communities for sustainable change, with workshops and discussions on wellness, advocacy, policy, and capacity building. The Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health made presentations. And many of the attendees also took the time to visit the National Civil Rights Museum. Centering Equity in the Clean Energy Transition: A Focus on Renewable Energy Transmission
As we continue to advance the clean energy transition in New York, how are project developers ensuring that our communities are meaningfully benefitting from clean energy investments, making Justice40 – and the environmental justice goals of the New York Climate law – a reality? Earlier this week, we hosted a webinar, Centering Equity in the Clean Energy Transition: A Focus on Renewable Energy Transmission, to explore this question. Panelists included Minority Millennials’ Founder & President Dan Lloyd, Orsted’s Labor Relations Commercial Workforce Development Director Erik Antokal, New York Power Authority’s Vice President of Environmental Justice Kaela Mainsah, and New York Transco’s Director of Communications & Public Affairs Shannon Baxevanis.
