John,
This morning, we’re kicking off our one-day #GivingTuesdayNOW campaign to focus on something really important.
As we face an existential threat from the COVID-19 virus, never has America more urgently needed a responsible news media.
And never have the media failed so completely in its role of keeping the public reliably informed in times of crisis. In fact, no institution has failed the public more during this pandemic.
This should be a time of national unity, yet the Trump-obsessed national media is tearing us apart. And if you thought you had seen the worst they can do to destroy
President Trump during last year’s impeachment charade, it’s only going to get worse from here.
This is why the MRC is participating in #GivingTuesdayNOW — to organize a concentrated effort today to raise the funds to fight this.
We are sending you this urgent message because the MRC must work harder now than ever in our history to take on the unhinged leftist media.
Ask yourself... who has really misled the public about the threat of COVID-19?
From the start, the leftist media misreported or falsely reported on the virus. Early on, you may remember, they were assuring the public that the virus was not a serious health risk.
On January 31st, the online journal Vox asked, “Is this going to be a deadly pandemic?” Their answer: “No.”
As the pandemic spread and concern grew, the leftist media changed direction. Instead of fact-based reporting, they made it their mission to scold Americans that it was “racist” and “xenophobic” to refer to the virus using the words “Wuhan” or “Chinese.” (Nonsense. Literally dozens of diseases are named after their place of origin, such as German measles and Spanish flu, for example.)
Keep in mind the leftist media used these terms themselves to describe the virus – until they decided it was politically incorrect to do so! On January 21st the New York Times reported that, “The first U.S. case of the Wuhan coronavirus has been confirmed in Washington State.”
Instead of reporting the news Americans need in order to cope with the fear and anxiety created by this pandemic – and the economic hardship it is creating for millions of our citizens – the deranged leftwing media is doing everything they can to lay the blame on President Donald Trump.
Let me assure you, despite the “stay at home” directives, despite the disruption of so many American workplaces, every department of the MRC remains 100 percent operational. With the help of donations from people like you, we made the technological investment over the years that allows our critical functions to be performed remotely.
Investments in the MRC by donors like you allow us to continue to operate when many others have been forced to close their doors.
And that’s especially critical right now because no one else does the work we do.
Since the start of most states’ stay-at-home orders:
- We’ve seen our best performance on Facebook this year, reaching nearly 9 million people
- Facebook engagement rate of 22.15% (111% of our annual goal!)
- 3.4 million Twitter impressions (122% of our annual goal!)
- 7.3 million video views (122% of our annual goal!)
- Combined 426,189 average weekday website visits (133% of our annual goal!)
In short, all of these stats (and more) are FAR above our usual numbers for this same time of year — which is fantastic! Your support makes this happen!
Also, a reminder, the recently-passed CARES Act includes some great financial incentives for giving to nonprofits:
- Donors may deduct up to $300 per person ($600 per couple!) without the necessity of itemizing their contributions
- Presently, only those who itemize their income tax deductions are able to use a charitable deduction of over $250. For the rest of 2020, an individual will be able to deduct up to $300 per person (up to $600 per couple), irrespective of whether they itemize their deductions.
While absolutely ANY gift amount helps, we strongly encourage you to go BIG and maximize your giving to take advantage of those tax incentives.
Please, donate what you can today!
