John,

My sweet little Daniel was an old soul. He was murdered when he was just 7 years old, but his compassion and kindness went well beyond his too-short years.

Daniel's teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary called him a "helper." They said he'd rush to walk his classmates to the nurse and play with children who were sitting alone. At home, he'd always make sure there was enough milk for the next person before pouring himself any.

As the world comes together today in that same spirit of kindness for #GivingTuesdayNow, we have a remarkable opportunity to protect more children from gun violence. We're pushing hard to keep children safe during this time away from the classroom – and to make sure that when they return, a school shooting will be the last thing they'll have to worry about. That's why we set a $50,000 #GivingTuesdayNow goal to make sure we have the resources to expand our lifesaving programs and prevent the next tragedy.

I hope you can help me honor Daniel's kind spirit and spare other parents from the never-ending anguish of losing a child to gun violence. Please, I'm personally asking: Will you donate anything you can spare before midnight to help us save more lives?

Please donate $10, or as much as you possibly can, to Sandy Hook Promise right away in honor of #GivingTuesdayNow. Every dollar you give will go toward protecting more children from gun violence.

I know so much is going on right now, but our work is still so important. Not only are we preparing for when children return to school – we're also working to save lives right now. While students have been learning at home, we've seen a rise in tips to our Say Something Anonymous Reporting System about young people's lives being in danger and children at risk of depression, suicide and abuse. That's why, even as many things are upended by this pandemic, we must continue our work to protect children from gun violence.

It's been more than seven years since my sweet little Daniel was murdered, and it never gets easier. But I have to keep doing this work every day, because there are still so many children's lives at stake.

On #GivingTuesdayNow, I hope you'll join me in honoring and celebrating Daniel by helping keep other children safe. It would mean so much to me.

Thank you,

Mark Barden (Daniel's father)
