We celebrated the 20th anniversary of the "Miller Project"

Dear John,

On September 6, more than 230 fellows of the Jack Miller Center, scholars, friends, board members, and staff gathered at the historic Union League of Philadelphia to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “Miller Project” in American education.
It was a memorable evening. The room was full of toasts and laughter, connections and reconnections, live music, and good food and drinks.

Our staff decorated and stocked bookshelves with the works of JMC scholars and we heard remarks from Jack and Goldie Miller and our board chair Michael Weiser, and we even handed out decks of cards featuring America’s founders.

This whole project started when Jack Miller called together 50 professors in Chicago back in 2004 to talk about the state of civic education at the university level.

Some of the founding scholars who took part in that meeting include Ralph Lerner ([link removed]) and Nathan Tarcov ([link removed]) from the University of Chicago, Harvey Mansfield ([link removed]) from Harvard, Robby George ([link removed]) from Princeton, Wilfred McClay ([link removed]) then of the University of Tennessee Chattanooga and now Hillsdale College, and Jim Ceaser ([link removed]) from the University of Virginia.

In the 20 years since then, Jack Miller has become nothing less than the leader of a national movement to restore civic education at level and in every part of this country.

Jack’s tenacity, vision, and generosity is inspiring. Goldie Miller has been there every step of the way, an extraordinary champion for this project in her own right. And a growing group of citizens have joined in this work, investors in a generational project.

My assessment is that we have accomplished two big things in 20 years. The first is that we have shaped the subfield of American political thought as has come to be—we have given it the consciousness of a community and supported scholars at key stages in their careers. The second big accomplishment is that we have formed the core of the talent pipeline for innovative new programs focused on civic thought and leadership that are now taking off in important corners of American academia, including public universities in several states—truly the most exciting reform effort in higher education today.

As we look to the 250^th anniversary of America coming up in two years, our theory of change is that the movement for civic education so needed in our country will come by way of scholars committed to teaching and studying the American political tradition—people like the dedicated men women who came to celebrate with us in Philadelphia.
There is no doubt in my mind that what these scholar-entrepreneurs do to advance knowledge will have ripple effects. They are teaching the rising generation of K-12 civics and history teachers. They are teaching the next generation of journalists, thought leaders, and nonprofit leaders. And they are helping to prepare the future political leaders of our country.

Looking ahead to the Jack Miller Center’s next 20 years, we have a solid foundation on which to build this movement for America’s founding principles and history. With more than 1,100 scholars in the JMC network, an energetic staff numbering two-dozen, and an influential board of directors, we invite you to join us with your own commitment to American civic education.

We welcome your ideas, your financial support, and your connections to educators at all levels who might benefit from participation in our programs.

Please feel free to email me
anytime at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) if you’d like to get involved. Finally, in honor of the Jack Miller Center’s 20^th anniversary, would you consider making a tax-deductible gift in support of our scholars whose work will have ripple-effects at every level of American education? A donation of any amount -- $20, $200, or $2,000 – will make a difference. Give online here ([link removed]) , or mail your check to:

The Jack Miller Center is an educational venture committed to solving the crisis of uninformed citizenship by teaching America’s founding principles and history. We aim to expand the pipeline of scholars dedicated to teaching America’s founding principles and history, to seed and cultivate college campus centers for the study of the American political tradition, and to advance the teaching of American citizenship in K-12 schools centered around our history and foundational texts.
