Dear John,
Please give what you can to the Nonhuman Rights Project on this special global day of giving, #GivingTuesdayNow, and support us in our mission to build a more just world for all.
As NhRP board member Dr. Jane Goodall explains here, the exploitation of nonhuman animals is a root cause of this pandemic as it has been for pandemics before it. This global public health crisis is an especially stark but far from unique example of how viewing and treating other animals as mere “things”—resources to be exploited for human use—undeniably hurts them and hurts us, and yet all over the world these practices continue on a staggering scale.
In our view, the lesson is simple: whether we’re talking about how to combat and prevent pandemics that originated with the imprisonment and exploitation of a nonhuman being or the suffering of the nonhuman being herself, we ignore scientific evidence, human experience, and the demands of justice at our peril.
We at the NhRP envision and are working to build a more just world for all because we know we all deserve to live in a world where we make decisions at all levels based on science, justice, and the interconnectedness of all life on earth. These are governing principles of our unique mission and work that apply equally to other global, systemic, existential issues we animals face, such as climate change and environmental destruction.
We understand giving may be difficult right now. Please know that the NhRP appreciates all forms of support, financial or otherwise. If you are in a position to give, please support us this Giving Tuesday in our unrelenting push for meaningful, lasting legal change in the lives of nonhuman animals, now and in the long term, and our fight to uphold the values and principles of justice that protect us all.
With gratitude,
Kevin Schneider
Executive Director, the NhRP
P.S. A reminder to please join us for a Facebook Live today at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET when NhRP President Steven M. Wise will discuss how the NhRP is pushing forward through this crisis to make lasting legal change in the lives of nonhuman animals through the recognition and protection of their fundamental rights. You don't need a Facebook account to watch.
