Dear John,
This week, bombs fell in Lebanon [[link removed]] . This month marked the 23rd anniversary of 9/11 - the day an act of terrible violence spurred the United States to launch a twenty-year war in the Middle East. And this month, Congress struggled to fund the U.S. government [[link removed]] .
On the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, we reported that the U.S. had spent $21 trillion on militarism [[link removed]] at home and abroad over those twenty years. And, throughout those wars, close to one million people died from the fighting [[link removed]] . Millions more died as a result of indirect effects [[link removed]] of the war.
We can see the same forces playing out now in Gaza, where Israeli military attacks have killed tens of thousands of people [[link removed]] , and disease and hunger threaten those who survive. And as far-right forces in Israel bring the fight to Lebanon, the threat of wider war makes the analogy to the U.S. 9/11 response more apt.
The good news is that there is something the U.S. can do: our government can stop arming Israel and demand more serious negotiations to end this.
This week is also New York Climate Week and the Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice [[link removed]?] . Activists in New York and around the world are gathering to demand a more peaceful world and real solutions to global problems, showing us the way forward.
In solidarity,
Alliyah, Lindsay, Hanna, and Aspen

TRADEOFF: 9/11 AFTERMATH VS. FULL DECARBONIZATION
On the brink of a new Middle East war that would be fought with U.S. weapons, we recognize that far too many tax dollars have been spent on post-9/11 wars and militarization, and not enough on building the infrastructures of care and resilience.
In the two decades after 9/11, the U.S. spent $21 trillion on foreign and domestic militarization [[link removed]] . As people in the U.S. and around the world face another year of climate-induced extreme weather, a fraction - $4.5 trillion - of this $21 trillion could fund the total decarbonization of our power grid. It’s time to prioritize welfare over warfare.

PROTESTS AGAINST NETANYAHU’S UN SPEECH IN NYC
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in NYC yesterday and delivered an address [[link removed]] to the United Nations. His visit comes amidst increasingly horrific humanitarian conditions [[link removed]] in Gaza due to the ongoing genocide [[link removed]] , escalating aggression in Lebanon [[link removed]] , and on the heels of a historic UN General Assembly vote [[link removed]] demanding an end to Israel’s unlawful presence in Occupied Palestinian Territories within the year.
New polling shows the majority of Americans [[link removed]] - including majorities of swing-state voters [[link removed]] - favor an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and believe the United States should condition aid or do not support U.S. military aid to Israel. In line with this view, on Wednesday Senator Sanders introduced a Congressional resolution [[link removed]] aimed at blocking the continued transfer of certain U.S. weapons to Israel. Protests [[link removed]] against Netanyahu’s visit were held in New York and around the country.

A CALL FOR TRANSFORMATIVE CHANGE: SHIFTUS CAMPAIGN
On September 17, a coalition of frontline community leaders and 50 organizations launched the ShiftUS Campaign [[link removed]] aimed at getting the U.S. to do its fair share for global climate action. The campaign calls on the U.S. to immediately end fossil fuel expansion and implement a just transition to 100% clean energy by 2030. It also spells out a fair share for U.S. climate contributions for the Global South, based on the U.S.’ regrettable position as the largest historical emitter of greenhouse gasses [[link removed]] .
To celebrate the launch, the coalition held a “ShiftUS to a Fair Climate Future” [[link removed]] event with the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) USA on September 26 as part of Climate Week NYC [[link removed]] . The ShiftUS campaign provides a number of ways to join in [[link removed]] .

“It's super clear that the U.S. is by far the greatest total [global] emitter. This is not to say that China shouldn't do its part, but that the imperative for the U.S. to act on its fair share is independent of what China does - as we do hold the largest share of responsibility as well as the highest capacity to address the issue.”
