15th Anniversary
Killing of Adolfo Ich / Shooting-paralyzing of German Chub

Rights Action remembers and honors Adolfo Ich Chaman, a Mayan Q’eqchi’ land and community defender, killed September 27, 2009 by security guards working at the Fenix Mine operation in El Estor, Guatemala.

We honor German Chub Choc, a Q’eqchi’ campesino shot and left paralyzed that same day.

Landmark lawsuits in Canada

Along with 11 Q’eqchi’ women from the Lote 8 community, Angelica Choc (widow of Adolfo Ich) and German continue to seek a measure of justice and reparations in Canadian courts in lawsuits filed in 2010 against Hudbay Minerals (then owner of the Fenix Mine) for what happened to Adolfo, German and – in a separate incident of mining-related violence – the 11 women from Lote 8.

Testimonies of Angelica, German and other Indigenous land and community defenders are featured in TESTIMONIO-Canadian Mining in the Aftermath of Genocides in Guatemala, edited by Catherine Nolin and Grahame Russell.

Call for immediate suspension of all Fenix Mine operations
Today, Angelica, German and the Lote Ocho women, along with Q’eqchi’ villagers from throughout El Estor continue to spear-head land and community defense struggles in the Q’eqchi’ territories of eastern Guatemala, resisting 60 years of violent, corrupt incursions of global mining companies.

It is now feared that Solway Investment Group (Switzerland) and Fenix Nickel Company (USA) are set to try and re-open Fenix Mine in Guatemala.

Rights Action supports this call of the Q’eqchi’ people of El Estor for:

  • Suspension: Immediate suspension of the Fenix mining operations in Q'eqchi' region of El Estor and Panzos.
  • Investigation: Formation of a commission to investigate violences and harms of mining between 2004-2024.
  • Reparations: Preparation of a compensation plan for Q’eqchi’ people and communities that suffered the violences and harms.
  • Consultation: Then, the implementation of a consultation process, based on prior and complete information, in the Q'eqchi' language, to decide if mining operations might continue in the future.

Thank-you Adolfo Ich

Thank-you Angelica, German and the women of Lote 8 for your exhausting and never-ending commitment to struggle in defense of Mother Earth, and Maya Q’eqchi’ human and territorial rights
