Hi John,

It’s just under a month until Mitzi Jonelle Tan comes to the UK for a series of events about how the Fossil Fuel Treaty can help us win a globally just energy transition.

Since I last emailed you, we have added more expert speakers to the events, such as deputy leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, Zack Polanski, and Colombian Consul General in London and former minister of mines and energy, Irene Vélez Torres - as well as one new event.

Now is the perfect time to get your free tickets!

Since we confirmed Mitzi’s trip, there’s been a major victory for activists fighting fossil fuels in the UK. In September, the High Court blocked the Whitehaven coal mine, a planned mine in west Cumbria that was approved by the previous government.(1)

This judgement means that the UK government must now reconsider its approval of the project. As this government has committed to ending all new coal projects, there’s hope that this climate-wrecking project won’t be approved a second time and will never see the light of day.

The government dropping its legal defence of Whitehaven might have been a nail in the coffin that was erected by the local activists who fought this project for years and dragged those responsible for it to court. South Lakes Action on Climate Change - which brought one of the winning cases - was founded in the wake of a Global Justice Now speaker tour that stopped in Kendal in 2007.

This group and its work is entirely independent of Global Justice Now, but its history is a reminder of the importance of opportunities to meet and strategise on a local or regional level. October’s events are a rare opportunity to do this with a globally renowned activist like Mitzi, who can speak about the global strategy for a just energy transition, and how the Fossil Fuel Treaty can help get us there.

UK-based speakers will help to lay out how we can all act locally for a globally just fossil fuel phase out, bringing the UK’s towns and cities into a global network of local leaders creating real change, and putting pressure on national government to go further, faster for a globally just transition.

These are going to be really exciting events, and I hope that you can join us.
