Be brave for a minute and imagine a future Trump presidency.

Think of him living up to his promise to be a “dictator on Day One.” Visualize the Project 2025 revenge tour against the “Deep State” and threats to use the legal system to round up immigrants and go after his political opponents. Picture how another Trump presidency not only endangers the lives and livelihoods of millions of Americans, but threatens the very fabric of our democracy itself.

Now imagine what can slip through the cracks in all of that chaos. One thing that no one is talking about right now, but plays a huge role in the future of the American experiment is the census. Project 2025 has a plan to install partisan officials to decide who gets counted and who doesn't. (And you can imagine how that might go.)

Here's why that could be devastating: The question of who gets counted plays a critical role in how state legislative and congressional maps get drawn, and how the federal budget is allocated. That's why it's always been nonpartisan officials in charge of the rules. What Trump's Project 2025 is trying to do is reshape our country by dramatically altering the census — whether it be for redistricting, or simply allocating funds from the government.
