Dear friends of the Quincy Institute,

Today is #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity in response to the unprecedented needs caused by COVID-19.

The virus has validated Quincy Institute’s core critique of US foreign policy: hyper-militarization makes us less safe, rather than safer. Trillions of dollars toward global military domination have left the country underprepared for a virus that has done more damage to United States than 9/11 and killed more American people in three months than during the entirety of the Vietnam War.

Our team is working tirelessly to change the way the United States defines national security in the post-COVID world. As Andrew Bacevich explains in this QI video, the preoccupation with projecting military power abroad has exposed Americans to real dangers at home – threats that are now putting both life and liberty at risk.

Turning to the Pentagon to save us from the pandemic, as some have suggested, is the wrong path. As Costs of War Co-Director and Quincy Institute board member Catherine Lutz explains, we need to fundamentally rethink national security, to include civilian solutions to the very real societal risks we face.

The pandemic has shaken up Washington's thinking about security. But only with a pro-active and systematic campaign can we force a real change.

That is where you come in. QI will lead the fight to establish a foreign policy that meets the challenges of this century, but we need you in this fight to win.
