Hi John,
Did you see the news in Wausau this week? The MAGA-led voter-suppression tactics are rolling out – so we need your help to defend voting rights.
After Wisconsin’s Supreme Court ruled that ballot drop box bans are unconstitutional, Wausau’s new mayor has been trying to undermine the decision and prevent the use of drop boxes in Wausau. He actually physically carted away a ballot drop box from city property himself – smiling and taking photos while he did. Now, he’s facing possible charges and an ethics investigation. His actions have drawn media coverage nationally – even the New York Times and Washington Post are shining a light on his behavior.
Mayor Diny and his MAGA allies know that Assembly District 85, which includes Wausau, is now a 50/50 district and it just might decide which party controls the Assembly.
His behavior is another sign that the extreme right has no problem with standing in the way of democracy and our rights as citizens. It’s not funny. It’s as serious as it gets. Dropboxes have long been in service and are safe, legal, and convenient for people to exercise their right to vote–people who might otherwise be prevented from voting due to disability, illness, work schedule, child care needs, or other challenges.
As we near the Nov. 5 election, it’s becoming even more clear the lengths some politicians will go to disenfranchise voters. A few weeks ago we announced our third and final round of endorsements for the General Election on Nov. 5. You can check out all our endorsements here.
One of our endorsed candidates, Yee Leng Xiong, is running for Assembly District 85, which includes Wausau. Xiong is a staunch supporter of democracy who will strengthen voting rights. He is just the kind of representative we need in Madison to protect our rights from extreme politicians like the mayor of Wausau.
