John,
The death penalty in this country continues to expose deep, structural injustices in our criminal legal system.
From wrongful convictions to prosecutorial misconduct, the death penalty has proven time and again that it is an irreversible punishment often carried out with tragic mistakes.
It’s not just a question of justice, but of morality.
If we want to ensure our justice system values life and fairness, we must end the death penalty. When elected I will join the fight to pass Rep. Espaillat's H.R. 1124, a bill in Congress to abolish the death penalty at the federal level. Can you contribute today to help us get to Washington and end the death penalty for good?
Just look at what happened this week…
A Missouri man on death row, Marcellus Williams, had maintained his innocence for over two decades. His case was wracked with prosecutorial misconduct and subsequent DNA evidence appeared to exonerate him. Despite all that, and against the wishes of the victim’s family, the far right governor of Missouri and his attorney general – aided by the conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court – executed Marcellus this week.
Williams’ case highlights everything that is wrong with our current system of capital punishment.
A previous Republican governor – no moderate himself – recognized the flaws in the case and ordered an indefinite stay of execution in 2015, creating an independent panel to review the evidence.
Yet, the current governor disbanded that panel before it could make its recommendations.
What’s even more disturbing in Williams’ case is that even when the St. Louis County Prosecutor and the victim’s own family called for clemency, the state pushed forward.
This is why I firmly oppose the death penalty. Always have and always will.
In cases like Marcellus Williams’, there is far too much room for error, bias, and injustice.
Beyond that – no state should have the power to execute its citizens, period.
As your next Congressman, I will work tirelessly to push for a federal ban on capital punishment.
It’s not just about fixing one case; it’s about ensuring our system of justice is fair, humane, and free of irreversible mistakes.
If you believe in fighting for a justice system that values life and truth, contribute today and help us bring that change to Washington.
It’s time for us,
David Kim
P.S. My team and I set a goal to raise $100K to talk to EVERY VOTER in CA-34 before early voting begins October 7th. We’re just over 45% of the way to our goal, and to stay on track we need to raise $10K a week from here on out. Can you pitch in towards this week’s goal?
