Did you know this, team? Even though the current California Legislature is the most diverse it has ever been, it’s still not representative of our state as a whole.

The proportion of women, Latino, and Asian American lawmakers in Sacramento doesn’t fully represent the vast number of Californians who share those identities. 

September is Hispanic Heritage Month, and it serves as an important moment to reflect on the influence the Latino community has had in shaping our state’s history. This month is also a reminder of how much work is still left to do in ensuring people of color have the necessary seats at decision-making tables. 

I’m asking you to help uplift Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) candidates running to serve our state by giving directly to their campaigns today. If you’re not sure where to start, you can split your contribution across 21 campaigns.

Representation matters, especially among those creating laws that impact our daily lives and shape California for future generations. When we elect people who share our lived experiences, we empower folks who know what families in our state are actually going through -- and what it takes to move us forward.

Electing a diverse group of lawmakers also has a massive ripple effect across our communities: The more our young people can see themselves in our legislative bodies, the more likely they are to run for office one day themselves. 

California is already a leader in the climate movement and in the diversity of our electeds. Let’s make that record even stronger by supporting these BIPOC climate champions who will prioritize environmental justice and fight for a sustainable, safe future.
