School shootings have become the norm in the United States. Children – including my own – are part of the Lockdown Generation, the hundreds of thousands of kids who have gone through school learning how to take cover in case of an active shooter while lawmakers offer their empty thoughts and prayers and NRA pocket politicians steamroll common-sense gun violence prevention legislation at every turn.
Earlier this month, two children and two adults were killed when a 14-year-old gunman opened fire at his school. And still, Congress failed to pass common sense legislation that is proven to save lives.
It should not be up to our kids to bulletproof their pencil cases and binders to protect themselves in school, they should be safe because our lawmakers have taken action to protect them.
