CNN analyst Harry Enten’s comments are worth reading in full. He said:

Older voters, those 65 and over, 4 years ago, Donald Trump won those voters by about 4 points. When Joe Biden got out of the race, Donald Trump was ahead by 4. Look at where we are today. Kamala Harris actually has a 3 point lead in the average poll among voters 65 and over. And let me point out, no Democrat has carried this group since Al Gore in 2000. So this could be the first time in 24 years that a Democrat actually carries voters 65 and over, despite the fact that Harris is doing worse among voters under the age of 30 and under the age of 34.

This is an excellent tradeoff for Harris. Let’s look: The percentage of 2024 likely voters under the age of 30 make up just 13% of likely voters. Look at this large chunk of likely voters that voters 65 and over make up. 29% in an average of the last 2 New York Times-Siena College polls. Obviously, you prefer not to shred support anywhere, but if you’re going to shred support somewhere, shred it among younger voters. Pick up support among older voters, because they make up nearly a third of the electorate! This is a GREAT trade-off for Kamala Harris.

Senior citizens are becoming a more and more important part of the electorate, and Kamala Harris is doing better now than any Democrat―at least in the final exit polls and post-election surveys―than any Democrat since Al Gore in 2000. It’s an excellent tradeoff, this is the reason that Kamala Harris is leading at least by a small margin in an average of the national polls, despite the fact that she’s losing support among younger voters, she’s gaining support among the most reliable part of the electorate.
