Artificial intelligence has created new, stronger methods of disinformation in elections, capable of swaying voters and even keeping them from the polls.

Just last month, Elon Musk shared a deepfake video of Kamala Harris in which a hyper-realistic but fake version of the Vice President degrades herself and calls herself a “deep state puppet.” The video was viewed more than 150 million times in just one week.

Tell your Governor: We must act now to put an end to misleading deepfakes in our elections.

California has taken the lead in curbing the spread of deepfake manipulation by passing four landmark bills. These laws ban deepfakes of candidates, elected officials, and election officials in political advertising or other election communications that are reasonably likely to harm the reputation of candidates or undermine confidence in the outcome of the election for 120 days before an election or 60 days after.
