The State of Kansas has new job vacancies on their website.  if you have not heard about the new Disability Hiring Preference available to qualified job seekers with disabilities, you can read about it on the State of Kansas Office of Personnel Services website. Qualified job seekers with disabilities can apply to use the hiring preference to be guaranteed an interview for jobs they apply for.

Join the Administration on Disabilities (AoD) Disability Employment Technical Assistance Center (DETAC) for our October 2024 National Community of Practice (CoP) webinar to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), The Role of American Job Centers (AJCs) in Promoting Access to Good Jobs for All.
People with disabilities play a crucial role in strengthening America’s economy. In support of this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) theme, Access to Good Jobs for All, we recognize the role of the American Job Center (AJC) Network. As required by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), AJCs and their partners provide access and opportunities to all job seekers, including individuals with barriers to employment to prepare for, obtain, retain, and advance in high-quality jobs. This webinar will spotlight four AJCs located in New York and Colorado. Presenters will provide insights on the services the AJCs provide, share a roadmap for accessing AJC services, discuss the critical role of partnerships in service delivery, and highlight the creative integration of universal design principles to ensure meaningful access to all customers using AJC services.

National Recovery Month

Substance use disorder affects people from all walks of life, working in all nature of jobs in businesses of every type and size, in towns and cities across the United States.

The good news is that substance use disorder is treatable and businesses can serve as a significant source of support for people in treatment or recovery. National Recovery Month, observed each September, is a great time to learn how. This year, two new resources from the ODEP-funded Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion (EARN) can help.

Supporting Employees with Substance Use Disorder: A Guide for Employers explores proactive strategies businesses can use to prevent or address worker substance use, while A Guide for Workers with Substance Use Disorders: What You Should Know approaches the issue from the worker perspective. Both guides make clear that substance use disorder may be covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act and offer common accommodations and inclusive workplace practices that businesses can adopt to signal support for employees working toward or in recovery.
The purpose of National Recovery Month is to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding substance use disorder and to support treatment and recovery practices. People in recovery make important contributions to America’s workplaces and communities every day. For many, meaningful work plays an important role in their continued sobriety—and small businesses can make a big difference in supporting their ongoing success.
