From Trump’s unfounded claim in February that the virus was just “going to disappear” to his suggestion that people with COVID-19 inject themselves with disinfectant, the White House, right-wing media and conspiracy theorists are spreading dangerous misinformation and outright lies about this pandemic day and night, often on social platforms.
Xenophobic and anti-Asian sentiments have also spread rapidly on social media, and white supremacists are exploiting the chaos of the moment as a recruitment opportunity — resulting in a surge of violence against Asians.
Yet Facebook, Twitter and YouTube still refuse to take responsibility for the content proliferating on their platforms.
