Tobacco’s harmful impact on Hispanic and Latino Americans

September marks the start of Hispanic American Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), a time to celebrate the remarkable impact of Hispanic and Latino Americans on our nation’s history. It’s also a time to acknowledge the challenges that Hispanic and Latino Americans continue to face today, including the harmful effects of commercial tobacco. In the 1970s and 1980s, Big Tobacco developed interest in the growing Hispanic population and launched marketing initiatives. Since then, the industry has sponsored Hispanic and Latino cultural and sporting events, provided scholarships, and contributed to Hispanic political action committees – all ways it maintains its influence.

TV ads for e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches show youth-appealing content that is banned for cigarettes

Television ads for JUUL, Vuse, and Velo included young models, animations, and music while emphasizing e-cigarette flavors and themes of self-expression and social acceptance, according to research published in Substance Use & Misuse. TV commercials for cigarettes and smokeless tobacco have been banned, but these restrictions don’t apply to commercials for e-cigarettes and oral nicotine pouches.

This week in tobacco policy news

California – Governor Newsom signed into law SB 1230 which authorizes the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration to seize illegal, flavored tobacco products discovered during routine tobacco tax inspections. The law will also increase the civil penalties for retailers who sell illegal tobacco products and tobacco products to people under 21 years old.
