John --
We hope that COVID-19 has not affected you or your loved ones.
Unfortunately, there is the potential that COVID-19’s impact on an
unprecedented number of guns sold in the months of February and March
will end in tragedy.
Gun sales have surged in North Carolina, where gun retailers report
increases of 500%-1000% above normal March gun sales, especially for
first-time buyers. This has the potential to exacerbate an already
concerning trend in gun deaths.
Our goal right now is to educate gun owners, especially first-time
buyers, about the dangers of unsecured guns. We have produced ads
on firearm suicide and another on children
and unsecured guns. With your support, we
can broaden the number of gun owners we reach on
Facebook.
Can
you chip in whatever amount you can to help us reach more people on
social media?
The N. C. Division of Public Health reports that 70% of all gun
deaths occur in the home. These tragedies are mainly due to firearm
suicides (60% of NC gun deaths), domestic violence, and unintentional
shootings. North Carolina’s youth (ages 10 to 17) suicide rate has
almost doubled in the last decade (82.6% increase). During the same
period, the rate for adults has increased by 13.7%.
Together we can make a difference and save lives in North
Carolina.
Thank you for your support, Becky
