Dear Friend --

From the start of this health crisis, we promised you we would be guided by the best medical advice and data. We have listened to experts and have forged strong partnerships with the state and neighboring cities. We have not rushed and have worked hard to prepare for any medical emergency. We now have robust testing in place, we expanded hospital capacity, stocked up on personal protective equipment, and our hospitals have enough ventilators. We have also followed the state health rules and guidance.

Earlier today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that as early as this Friday, counties and health departments can begin relaxing our "Safer at Home" orders. He has provided regions flexibility on the timeline of openings but has made clear what types of businesses would be allowed to open in this next stage. Long Beach and most cities will begin easing into this phase in the weeks ahead.

The state will soon allow retailers like bookstores, florists, music stores, toy stores, sporting good retailers, and clothing stores to open with curbside pick up only. Some manufacturing and factories will also be allowed to reopen. The Governor has been clear other types of businesses like restaurants or office workplaces will not be allowed to open in this next phase.

Over the next couple of days, Long Beach will be releasing more information on our local process. In addition, we will be making meaningful adjustments to our outdoor recreation policy that will go into effect for this weekend. We know how important these adjustments are to the community and we are going to ensure they are made in the safest way possible.

More info to come tomorrow.

Thank you,

Mayor Robert Garcia
