BIG WIN: CAMEROON PASSED A HISTORIC LAW TO PROTECT ITS RICH BIODIVERSITY
Cameroon’s new forestry and wildlife law marks a historic milestone in protecting the nation's rich biodiversity. The new law, passed by parliament at the end of July, represents a major revision of legislation originally established in 1994. It considerably strengthens the framework for protecting the nation’s forests and wildlife while preserving the customary rights of local communities.
“The new law sends a strong signal that Cameroon will no longer tolerate the illegal exploitation of its wildlife,” said Jennifer Biffot, WildAid representative for Francophone Africa. “It demonstrates Cameroon’s firm commitment to safeguarding its natural heritage and guaranteeing the conservation of endangered species for future generations.”
This updated legislation is critical as Cameroon is home to numerous endangered species, including 3 species of pangolin, and its vast forests are crucial for sequestering carbon and combating climate change globally.
Huge congrats to Cameroonian authorities on this milestone! We're dedicated to supporting the law's implementation and continuing our collaborative efforts to ensure a sustainable and thriving environment for future generations of Cameroonians.

DID YOU KNOW? THERE’S A MARINE SUPERHIGHWAY IN THE EASTERN TROPICAL PACIFIC THAT SAFEGUARDS MARINE LIFE ON THE MOVE!
The Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape is a vibrant marine paradise nestled at the convergence of Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador’s coastal waters. This unique region is defined by its exceptional geological formations, deep-sea trenches, and rich biodiversity.
Over 300 species of fish—including sharks, mantas, and tunas—along with humpback whales, blue whales, and sea turtles, use this area as a migratory swim-way and feeding ground. This marine superhighway is protected by a series of bordering Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that provide safe passage for marine wildlife.
The Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR) is a regional initiative led by Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador to create a sustainably managed biological corridor connecting these protected areas. At WildAid, we support the efforts of the CMAR partner countries to combat illegal fishing, poaching, and other threats that are destroying these fragile ecosystems. WildAid provides expertise and training in marine conservation, enforcement, and surveillance to ensure the survival and long-term success of this vital swimway.
Join us on November 21st to be inspired by our progress protecting vulnerable wildlife and habitats like sea turtles, pangolins, mangrove forests, and more. We’ll share stories of WildAid’s positive impact restoring ocean ecosystems, addressing climate change, and protecting vulnerable wildlife around the world.
As you plan your gift-giving this coming winter, we invite you to consider a donation to WildAid. Donation support has allowed WildAid to grow our wildlife conservation impact worldwide. We can't do it without you!
A gift of stock or a grant from a Donor-Advised Fund offers a dual advantage. They allow you to make an even greater impact on WildAid’s conservation efforts and, at the same time, offer you and your family the best possible tax benefits.
