This summer I visited eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where two years of mass displacement and horrific levels of violence are having devastating impacts on children’s lives.
What I saw was heart-wrenching. No child should live in the dire conditions I witnessed in displacement camps — separated from their families, hungry, unable to go to school and constantly at risk of sexual abuse, violence and exploitation.

Currently, 1 in 3 children in eastern DRC suffer from severe food poverty.
That's when children have access to just two food groups or fewer a day. For some that could be just a piece of potato or a plantain, a few grains of rice or nothing at all.
These conditions are all compounding — yet, amidst the pain, there is hope.
Every day, I watched as UNICEF and partners went to work to deliver lifesaving nutrition services and emergency supplies to children and families. This response is reaching children with much needed relief and the chance to just be kids again.
