| John, The July 7th, 2016 mass shooting of Dallas police officers marked a turning point in my life. The deaths of those officers, compounded by the recent deaths of two Black men at the hands of police, left me deeply troubled. The aftermath forced me to confront questions that had been lurking beneath the surface for years about race, violence, and medicine. Suddenly thrust into the national spotlight, I found myself speaking publicly for the first time about the harsh realities I witnessed daily in the trauma bay –– while questioning my purpose as a doctor. |
