BREAKING: Wake Forest. Several departments at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina had planned to

host an event described as “The Al-Aqsa flood — reflections on a year of genocide and resistance” on the one-year anniversary of the October 7 massacre. Not only was the event using Hamas’ term to describe its massacre of innocents on 10/7, but it was going to feature Rabab Abdulhadi, a professor at San Francisco State University who in 2019 hosted a digital event with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine — a US-recognized terrorist group. Thanks to a petition started by Jewish students and pressure from the community (including

ADL), the university announced this morning that it is canceling the Abdulhabi event since it was “inherently contentious and stands to stoke division in our University campus community.” Instead, Wake Forest will host a day of reflection and interfaith prayers for peace. We applaud this change, and congratulate the students for taking the lead.

Urge universities to create safety plans for protests on October 7 and protect Jewish students.

Brandeis. President Ronald Liebowitz of Brandeis University announced on Wednesday that he would
[link removed]
resign from his position effective November 1. This follows a vote of “no confidence” that was narrowly passed by the Brandeis faculty the previous day. The
[link removed]
resolution behind this vote cited “badly handled budget shortfalls, failures of fundraising, excessive responses to student protests, indifference to faculty motions, and the recent damaging staff layoffs,” according to a draft published in the Brandeis student newspaper. We can’t judge the totality of Liebowitz’s tenure, but he has been a leader in battling campus antisemitism, hosting a presidential summit on the topic and showing real leadership when he became the first private university president to ban Students for Justice in Palestine last November. On his watch, Brandeis was one of two campuses in the country to get an “A” on the ADL report card.
We look forward to working with him in whatever role he is in.
~~~~~
NYU. Anti-Israel student groups at New York University, including Students for Justice in Palestine, announced a
[link removed]
boycott of the university’s Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment training on Tuesday in a social media post that also condemned the university’s new policy clarifying discrimination against a person for being a Zionist is prohibited. The post accused this policy of “blatantly misusing title VI guidelines to protect an ethno-nationalist political ideology,” claiming it is “dangerous and harmful to all Jewish people” to assert that Zionism “is an ‘important’ part of many Jewish people’s identities.” If that total misreading of Judaism and the attitudes of the overwhelming majority of Jews wasn’t enough to know how
disconnected from reality these groups have become, it's worth noting the first comment on this post read “Most people already completed it because i think its [sic] already been due.”
CUNY. The former judge who authored the Monday
report that said CUNY must “significantly” update its policies to address antisemitism recently told reporters that “During the course of the review, we became aware that certain students, faculty, and organizations were
advising people not to speak with us.” Jonathan Lippman: “We wanted to hear from not only those who believed they were victims of antisemitism but also from those who believed they were victims of false claims of antisemitism.” But by refusing to cooperate, he believes these protesters have “hurt their own case.”
Cornell. A British student at Cornell University says he may now face
deportation following his second suspension for activities related to anti-Israel protests. The latest suspension came after he and dozens of other students shut down a Cornell career fair on Wednesday, with protesters shouting and banging pots as students tried to mingle with recruiters. An email from the university told the suspended student that his actions demonstrated “escalating, egregious behavior and a disregard for the University policies” before explaining that his F-1 visa would be terminated.
Fund Feds. As close readers of this update know, one of the main avenues of redress for campus antisemitism is to file complaints with the US Department of Education that the university is violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. The office that investigates those complaints and has the power to issue sanctions is the Office of Civil Rights in the Education department. But at a recent roundtable with seven Members of Congress, Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon outlined how
[link removed]
limited resources means her team “cannot manage” the volume of complaints, explaining that her workforce hasn’t expanded since the Bush administration. Notably, the Members who attended support a bill that would increase funding for Lhamon’s office -- as do we.
Urge Congress to fully fund the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights and call on the Department of Education to take critical steps to protect Jewish students.
Taking to Task. The co-chairs of Columbia University’s Task Force on Antisemitism have taken to task the attempts by a Columbia professor to
discredit student testimonials in their pathbreaking report. In an op-ed in the Columbia Spectator, they say that Professor “Michael Thaddeus seems to think that Jewish and Israeli students have made up their painful stories — or, perhaps, that the Task Force has.” They then lay out how Thaddeus presents an analysis that is merely a “pattern of misinterpreting, misrepresenting, and cherry-picking” students' testimonials.
History Lesson. The US House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill on Monday to study the possibility of making the
Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia a full member of the Smithsonian Institution. The bill’s author, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schulz (D-FL), said: “With antisemitism skyrocketing, acknowledging the past and acting to build a better tomorrow is more critical than ever. It will take a whole-of-society effort to do this, and folding the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History into the Smithsonian is one step toward that goal.”
Like No Water for Chocolate. After learning about the multiple threats facing the cocoa plant,
[link removed]
Israeli environmental scientist Ellen Graber began experimenting with different strains of cocoa in order to find the hardiest. In the days after 10/7, one of her cultivation sites near the Gaza border became a closed military zone, and she was unable to tend to her experimental cocoa plants. Three months later, she and her team regained access to the site to discover that some of the cocoa plants had thrived, despite the water deprivation. To their surprise, they had unearthed an unusually tough cocoa variant, seemingly able to survive in the inhospitable Israeli desert. Sometimes out of the bitterest of moments, something sweet grows.
