Watch my recent conversation with the Council on Foreign Relations as we delve into key domestic and foreign policy issues impacting American Muslims.
Dear John,
I recently joined the Council on Foreign Relations for a timely discussion centered on key domestic and foreign policy issues that deeply impact the American Muslim community. Our conversation delved into addressing discriminatory U.S. national security policies, the ongoing threat of Islamophobia, and the vilification of students protesting for Palestine.
Noting that almost all organizations labeled as foreign terrorist threats are Muslim, I shared the ways in which Islamophobia is deeply embedded in U.S. policies, while white supremacist groups remain largely unchecked. This discriminatory approach fuels suspicion against American Muslims and has resulted in increased surveillance, travel restrictions, and hate crimes within our communities.

Also lending her expertise to the conversation was Nazita Lajevardi, Associate Professor of Political Science at Michigan State University. While speaking on the diversity within the American Muslim community, she revealed that for many Muslims across all political affiliations and backgrounds, the ongoing genocide in Gaza is the top issue influencing their vote.
As the elections draw near, it’s more important than ever to stay informed and make sure our voices are heard. This discussion is a must-watch for anyone interested in understanding how these issues shape the American Muslim experience today and what they mean for our collective future.
In Service,
Salam Al-Marayati
MPAC President
