Angus King

Happy National Lobster Day, John!

As Senator, I have the privilege of working on behalf of my Maine constituents to bring about lasting change, both big and small. As we approach my campaign’s final end-of-quarter fundraising deadline ahead of the election, I want to share one of my favorite “smaller” accomplishments: getting our cherished lobster added to the ever-growing lexicon of emojis.

But first, I need to ask a small favor of you: Can you chip in $10 to my campaign before our last major deadline before I’m up for re-election so I can continue making a difference in the Senate?

In the months preceding the lobster emoji’s historic debut, I wrote a letter to the Unicode Consortium urging them to add the lobster due to its impact on our state and country as a whole.

Emojis are fun, and the 🦞 emoji is no different. But this effort was more than just a lighthearted gesture - it was an important recognition of this aquatic creature’s cultural and economic significance in our state.

Lobstermen and women are the lifeblood of Maine’s economy, with fisheries accounting for hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. The people who work long hours under tough conditions to catch the delicious crustaceans are responsible for Maine’s worldwide reputation as the land of lobsters. Maine just wouldn’t be Maine without lobsters, so it stands to reason that they deserve their very own emoji.

I’m committed to supporting the Maine people who know, better than anyone, the importance of the lobster. I will continue to support legislation, both big and small, that honors and uplifts all of the things that make Maine such a special place to live and raise a family.

When people ask me about the 🦞, I know it’s a little thing. But I figure, if one person out of ten who uses that emoji buys a Maine lobster or takes a vacation to Maine, it’s not just cute - it’s a free advertisement for our state.

Thank you,

🐮👑

P.S. I’m up for re-election in just 40 days, and my last end of quarter deadline before the big day is this week. To keep creating lasting change in the U.S. Senate, my campaign is counting on contributions (big or small) from supporters like you to hit our goal. Will you chip in $20?

There is nothing more important to Senator King than doing right by the people of Maine. This means fighting on their behalf for the issues that matter most, whether that’s health care, national security, veterans, education, economic certainty, the environment or job creation. Throughout his decades of public service, he has worked tirelessly to build relationships and improve opportunities for all Maine people, from Kittery to Fort Kent.
