Friends,
As you know, the right-wing supermajority on the Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump — and future presidents — may be immune from prosecution for crimes they commit while in office.
That’s why yesterday, I participated in a Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing where we heard from experts about the danger this decision poses.
In the United States, we believe that NOBODY is above the law. But the right-wing Supreme Court majority ruled the opposite.
That’s why it’s so important that we pass the No Kings Act. A bill that would re-establish that the President is not immune from federal law and clarify once more that only Congress has the power to write new laws to determine who is subject to federal criminal laws.
The court refused to rule that even a single action that Donald Trump took in the days before January 6, 2021 was “unofficial.”
Trump has been given a free pass to weaponize the Department of Justice and pressure elected officials and civil servants to do his bidding.
Justice Sotomayor said in her dissent, “Every president in our history has governed with the understanding, shared by the American people, that they could be held accountable for crimes committed while in office.”
I share her fear for our democracy and stand with her. It is why I am leading the fight in the Senate to pass legislation that would restore accountability and checks and balances within our government.
Thank you,
Alex
