As you know, Hurricane Helene is set to make landfall in Georgia later this week, and Governor Brian Kemp has issued a State of Emergency. While we pray that the worst impacts of the storm will not affect our district, we must be prepared for all scenarios.
Recommended items for your basic ready kit include:
- Water - At least 3 gallons per person, for drinking and sanitation
- Food - At least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food
- Can opener - For food, if kit contains canned food
- Radio - Battery-powered or hand crank NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Whistle - To signal for help
- Face mask - To help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties - For personal sanitation
- Wrench or pliers -To turn off utilities
- Local maps

FEMA Update
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has granted a major disaster declaration for Georgia counties impacted by Tropical Storm Debby. This declaration will release federal funding to help the recovery of communities and individuals impacted by the storm.
Assistance to individuals and households is available in the following First District counties: Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, and Long.
For those in counties eligible for individual assistance, you can apply for assistance HERE or by calling 1-800-621-3362.
Public assistance for actions taken to prevent or reduce long term risk to life and property from natural hazards is being offered for the following First District counties: Appling, Bacon, Brantley, Bryan, Camden, Charlton, Chatham, Effingham, Long, McIntosh, Pierce, Ware, and Wayne.
